What Are We Saving It For?

Welcome to our regular Saturday feature “What Aggravates Me”

It seems like the World Series just ended. Probably because the World Series just ended last week. If you’re from Pittsburgh, the World Series is when two baseball teams play for the championship. You know like the Penguins in the Stanley Cup Finals or the Steelers in the Super Bowl.

Believe it or not there are teams that actually spend money to compete instead of shoving all profits into the owner’s pockets. Some of these teams go so far as to sign players that can help them win. Instead of looking for starting pitching in other teams trash bins to increase the profit margin.

What I’m trying to say is, it’s still early November. You know that awkward time of year when you don’t know if it’s too late to still be lighting up for Halloween or too early to light up for Christmas.

This past week, we also got our first shot of cold and the first glimpse of that ugly white stuff flying around. Don’t tell me you like snow either. If you do, all I can say is,

“What the hell’s wrong with you?”

Last weekend was also the start of “Daylight Savings” time. When we roll back the clocks an hour. Yeah, it’s sweet on Sunday morning, when you get that extra hour of sleep. Then comes Sunday afternoon and it’s dark outside by 5:30. At this time of year we get very little sunshine and most days are gray and gloomy anyway. Then they tell us, we’re getting even less of that in exchange for total darkness.

This is the time of year when we need more daylight. We’re shut in, cold, depressed…that’s why by February people are walking around the grocery store looking to pick a fight. Ok, maybe it’s just me. Ok, so I’m that way in July too. Leave me alone.

If we’re actually saving daylight, shouldn’t we have some extra to use in these miserable months when we really need it? In fact, let’s take the daylight we save and have one day of 24 hour daylight once a month in the winter. We can have it on weekends, so everyone can enjoy it.

Yeah, I know it’s a ridiculous idea. But, is it any more ridiculous than at 2 AM on Sunday morning it suddenly becomes 1 AM again because we enjoy 1 AM so much? Don’t forget, the extra hour of sleep you got last weekend will be taken back in March. I don’t think anyone has ever uttered the phrase,

“Oh good, one less hour of sleep.”

It’s just a ridiculous concept to keep changing the times. There are places in the country that don’t practice “Daylight Savings.” They stay the same all the time. The state of Indiana has different time zones in the same state. That can really throw you out of whack. You’re always on the phone saying,

“I’m sorry I woke you. What time is it there?”

Anyway, there’s talk about this being the last year for “Daylight Savings” time. Of course, there’s a movement to end it. We have way too many movements these days. That’s why I just started a movement to end all movements.

So, we just have to ride it out and hope for good news from the groundhog. In the meantime, try not to punch anybody out in the frozen foods section.
