Mistake in the Oxford Dictionary RE: Jagoff Definition

You know the old joke… “Look up ugly in the Oxford Dictionary and you see so-and-so’s picture!” Well, here’s one in real life (IRL as the young people might say in a snapchat.)

This Fall, it warmed our hearts to find that the extremely useful term “jagoff” was added to the Oxford English Dictionary. They didn’t get it quite right but we didn’t argue too much because it was about time that the word received its proper recognition.

US dialect

  • (chiefly in western Pennsylvania) a stupid, irritating, or contemptible person.

Example sentence: Get off of your phone and DRIVE, Ya Jagoff!

Origin: 1930s: from jackoff, perhaps influenced by jag.

Pronunciation

jagoff

/ˈjaɡˌôf/

In fact, we were so pleased at this development, that we just now noticed something ELSE was missing from the Oxford Dictionary. There’s an additional definition. It’s a tiny change, but 100% necessary. Here are the proper corrections:

Jagoff:  Noun (chiefly in Western Pennsylvania).

  1. A stupid, irritating, or contemptible person, you angrily say, “Ya Jagoff!”
  2. Term of endearment, with a smile and a hug, you say, “Ya Jagoff!”
  3. Expressing being startled, “You scared the HECK outta me, Ya Jagoff!”
  4. (see photo)
