Mast-o-Khiar (Persian Cucumber Dip)

Did you know that the Persian New Year is coming up? It’s always celebrated on the first day of spring (March 20 this year).

Nelli Tokleh of Food Nerds sent over a recipe for Mast-o-Khiar — something that Nelli’s family traditionally eats during this time.

Mast-o-khiar (or, Persian cucumber dip) is a creamy yogurt dip mixed with cucumbers and herbs, similar to Greek tzatziki. This easy-to-make dip pairs well with rice meals, bread and crackers.

Give it a try!

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb yogurt
  • 2 Persian cucumbers
  • 1 tbsp dried mint
  • salt & pepper

Preparation:

  1. Cut cucumbers in half, then cut in half again and slice in 1/4 inch pieces.
  2. Add 1 tablespoon of dried mint, sat, and pepper to yogurt. Optional – add a dash of sumac seasoning
  3. Add cucumber and mix everything together.
  4. Garnish with fresh or dried mint and more sumac!
