Where Ya At: Carolina Beach

Let’s head to the beach! I recently spent a little over a week with family at a house at Carolina Beach, North Carolina. The beach was beautiful and we spent a lot of time playing in the ocean.

In the evening, we took a walk down to the boardwalk. You can play some games, buy tickets for an amusement ride, visit the arcade, do some shopping, or grab a drink. You can also do one of my favorite things, enjoy a corndog and fresh squeezed lemonade. Most of the activities are cash only. The Carolina Beach area is also golf cart friendly and you can rent one to make traveling around the area a little easier.

One thing this area is known for is donuts. The classic Britt’s Donut Shop opened in 1939 and moved to its current location in 1969.

They are so good they only need to offer one kind of donut, the homemade glazed. They make the donuts right in front of you, and they are incredibly light and delicious. Most days the business has a line and for very good reason. They are cash only and absolutely worth the wait.

If you’re looking for a variety of donut flavors, visit Wake N Bake Donuts. They offer so many glazes, fillings, and toppings including breakfast cereals, candy bars, bacon, and even ghost pepper infused chocolate. Don’t be intimidated by the flavor combinations, you are going to want to try them all. They even offer vegan and gluten friendly options.

When you start posting photos of your trip online, you’ll be surprised by how many of your friends are now living in the Wilmington area. It’s full of former yinzers! Meet them at Block Taco.

While you’re there, do yourself a favor by trying something other than your usual taco order. I recommend the brussel sprout taco, loaded nachos, and seasonal shrimp tostada. They also offer horchata and fresh squeezed limeade.

Sit outside or order a drink at the neighboring Satellite Bar and Lounge.

If it’s raining or you just need a break from the beach, take your family to the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher. This aquarium is home to sea turtles, otters, alligators, sharks, seahorses, and more! Kids of all ages will enjoy the exhibits. They also have one of the best concession areas.
