What R the Jags Baking at the Pittsburgh Irish Festival?

John Chamberlin

Pittsburgh Irish Festival YaJagoff Apple Cake

September 5, 6, 7th is the Pittsburgh Irish Festival and the Jags will be there as usual. This year, there will be some jag-baking going on in the Five Farms Irish Cream Celtic Demo Kitchen.

Thanks to Cathy W., the jags are baking a traditional Irish Apple Cake with a non-traditional addition, a Five Farms Irish Cream glaze!

Now that you’re mouth is watering and your wondering.. YES….there will be samples after the demo!

If ya want the recipe, here ya go:

When you think of Irish comfort food, it’s not just stews and soda bread — it’s also the humble Irish Apple Cake. A staple in farm kitchens for generations, this cozy dessert makes the most of crisp apples, simple pantry ingredients, and a touch of spice. Traditionally, it’s served plain or with warm custard, but we’ve given it a little modern twist: a light drizzle made with Five Farms Irish Cream. Sláinte, YaJagoffs!

Traditional Irish Apple Cake

Ingredients (Cake):

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cold & cubed
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 4 large Granny Smith apples (peeled, cored, and sliced thin)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk (whole milk preferred)

For the Topping:

  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9-inch springform pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, and spices.
  3. Cut in the butter with a pastry cutter (or fingers) until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in sugar and sliced apples.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk eggs with milk, then stir into the flour-apple mixture until just combined.
  6. Spread into prepared pan and sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar topping over the batter.
  7. Bake for 45–50 minutes, until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving.

Optional Five Farms Irish Cream Drizzle Icing

This isn’t traditional, but it adds a fun Pittsburgh twist with an Irish kick!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2–3 Tbsp Five Farms Irish Cream
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Whisk all ingredients until smooth.
  2. Adjust consistency: more sugar for thickness, more Irish Cream for a thinner drizzle.
  3. Drizzle lightly over cooled apple cake before serving.
