Summary: We gathered with a 11 creators, their non-profit partners and a few hundred people at the Mall at Robinson to celebrate the beginning of picnic season.  We celebrated with a whole bunch of Strawberry Jell-O Pretzel Salad concoctions… traditional, non-traditional like fudge, cookies, ice cream!  Who won the prize from our sponsors, KB Plumbing and Signature Kitchens of PA.

Connie tells us about her spin on the Strawberry Pretzel Jell-o Salad. Hers is a homemade small batch ice cream made with fresh strawberries, sweet cream with a pretzel cookie made from butter toffee that, if you missed at the standoff, you can find this week at their store in McKees Rocks. Cookie Cookie Ice Cream started when Connie’s daughter was in high school and wanted to work in food service but no restaurant would work with special needs transition students. They’re competing for Camp Park, a continuously running camp for special needs from the Laurel Highlands. That organization supports families medically fragile children by providing basic necessities, financial assistance, and programs that nurture emotional well-being. Ethan highlights Jay’s concoction made with a nice strawberry jellè, strawberry sauce cooked down with Grand Marnier and vanilla bean, a nice creamy layer of cream cheese, whip cream and sour cream and then an added crunch with a pretzel. Jay’s Yinzer Parfait is competing for Ryan Douglass Field of Dreams Baseball Clinics. Kids 6 to 12 get to learn the techniques of hitting, pitching, fielding and base running instructions and the clinics are held around the Pittsburgh area.

The winner was Jay’s Yinzer Parfait but the real winner was the RyanDouglass Field of Dreams. The Ryan Douglass Field of Dreams Baseball Clinics are for 6-12 year old children (but won’t turn older or younger children away who are there) and consists of hitting, pitching, fielding, and base running instructions. These clinics are held at various athletic associations around the Pittsburgh area.
