No jaggin’ around today……according to the American College of Emergency Physicians, there are an estimated 300 to 400 physician deaths by suicide each year in the United States. Of those, JAMA Psychiatry found that female physicians have a 53% higher risk of suicide than women in the general population.
To support physician well-being and recognize the critical role physicians play in our community during National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month in September, ACMS (Allegheny County Medical Society) is launching a community-driven “DocTag” initiative called “Love Your Doc.” And we’re all in on this with ACMS.
Starting with The Brave Bean, a small-business coffee shop located in the North Shore and Pitcairn, patrons are invited to “prescribe” their doctors with appreciation through a wall of prescription pad-themed notes. Just like more traditional campaigns.. you complete the blank message ..the business posts the message to build the wall of support. The best part is… its FREE! The messages will also be shared through social media channels and other mediums to spread the positive messages.
What to do next? Stop by either, OR BOTH, locations of the Brave Bean and post a message about your fave physicians. Follow the Brave Bean and ACMS on social channels to see the updated messages. And if you have a small business that wants to participate in the campaign with a shaht-aht wall, let us know! This campaign will be 12 months long ’cause we want to show our apprish all year!
