Jagoff Dictionary Petition

Get the word “Jagoff” into Webster’s Dictionary.

As a Pittsburgher, do you find it unacceptable that Hashtagselfie, and tweep join over 150 new words and definitions added to Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate® Dictionary in 2014 but the word Jagoff is not in there?

It’s outrageous and, as Pittsburghers, we need to change this.  It’s time to rise up and take control!

The word Jagoff can be used in a few different ways:

  1. 1) Expressing appreciation to someone, with a smile on your face and a hug, you say, “Ya Jagoff!”
  2. 2) Expressing being startled, half chuckling you say, “You scared the HECK outta me, Ya Jagoff!”
  3. 3) And then there’s the version, that’s posted on our blog every day… venting about someone that has been a jerk, with a scowl on your face, “Learn to use a turn signal, Ya Jagoff!”

Reference to the word Jagoff derivation in the Pittsburgh City Paper here.

It’s NOT a swear word!

Call to Action

We are asking that everyone sign our petition to push the Webster’s Dictionary publishers to add the word Jagoff. As Pittsburgh continues to gain recognition for many things, we must stake our claim in the official dictionary.  Additionally, if silly words like qui, xis and suq are acceptable in Scrabble, Jagoff has to be acceptable. Without Double/Triple Words/Letters plays, it’s worth 18 points and could be a bigger game changer than a Jerry Meals call at home plate during a Pirates game.  Sign the petition.

For every signature collected, Pittsburgh-based, 3 Guys Optical Center will provide a coupon for their service AND make a donation to the Pittsburgh Emergency Medicine Foundation.
